Zambia’s Lusaka Securities Exchange is raking in huge turnovers and broadening market access – thanks to its digital financial innovation.

digital adoption and financial inclusion are on the rise in Zambia, driven by the growth of a mobile trading application, says the Lusaka Stock Exchange (LuSE).

Accessible around the clock, the official digital trading platform – introduced in 2021 – allows members of the public and retail investors to buy and sell shares of listed companies directly from their smartphones.

Registered users on the platform rose to 51 791 in July from 49 611 in June, according to the bourse.

This sustained growth reflects the successful execution of the exchange’s digital strategy, anchored in real-time, mobile-optimised trading access, simplified account management and trade execution, and enhanced market transparency, says Nicholas Kabaso, CEO of LuSE.

"The upward trend in digital engagement bodes well for long-term liquidity depth and broader retail market participation," says Kabaso. "As the user base matures and becomes more active, the potential for a meaningful increase in retail-driven trading volume rises."

The continued rise in digital adoption, growing retail participation and strength in select equities demonstrate that the foundations for a broader, more dynamic and more inclusive capital market are firmly taking shape, he adds.

Kabaso says that as Zambia moves towards greater political and economic clarity, the bourse sees an opportunity to turn this momentum into sustained growth.

LuSE is committed to expanding participation, deepening market liquidity, embracing innovation and connecting more Zambians with capital market opportunities, he says.

"The journey ahead is one of transformation, and we believe the best chapters for Zambia’s capital markets are still to be written," says Kabaso.
