Cassava Technologies has taken another step towards enhancing Africa's digital journey by naming telecoms veteran Marco Gagiano as global head of connectivity, effective September.

Cassava announced Gagiano's new role yesterday, asserting that the move will strengthen the company's leadership team and reinforce its commitment to becoming the leading digital solutions provider in its target markets.

The appointment comes as Cassava is making major moves towards Africa's digital future.

Cassava took more crucial digital moves this month, including a partnership with Accenture to expand its sovereign AI capability across Africa.

In addition, Strive Masiyiwa, founder and executive chairman of Econet Global and Cassava Technologies, shared his plans to build Africa's first network of AI factories at the recently concluded 80th United Nations General Assembly.

The AI factories will be powered by NVIDIA GPUs and are expected to be completed by 2026, according to the tech entrepreneur. The plan, according to him, will anchor the continent's involvement in the global AI economy.

Cassava AI factories will start in South Africa and then expand to Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria.

Regarding Gagiano's hiring yesterday, the business stated: “Marco will be responsible for the connectivity business across Africa, including all of Cassava’s fibre, satellite, wireless and wholesale voice and connectivity services.”

Gagiano brings over two decades of leadership experience in telecoms and technology across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

His has previously held senior executive roles at MTN, Vodacom and Vodafone Group, covering product strategy, digital transformation and commercial growth.
