The African chapter of the UITP (L'Union internationale des transports publics) and the UATP (African Union of Public Transport) will host the Best Practices in Africa for Africa workshop, focused on the use of technology to improve public transport, in Cape Town from 21 October.
Event organiser Kendall Lodewyk has urged the participation of ICT companies at the three-day workshop, which will cover ICT solutions and application within the transport sector.
There will also be discussion on how cities can enhance their efficiency using technology, with Transport for Cape Town's automated fee collection and smart card systems presented as a case study.
The electronic ticketing system won the International Mastercard Award for 'Best Bank Card Ticketing Scheme 2014.
An excerpt from an announcement of the workshop issued by TCT read, "TCT adopted an innovative approach to resolving complex spatial, socio-economic legacy, and explored and developed specifically applicable best practices. The workshop is not about highlighting the success of Cape Town's transport system, but to empower other African cities, by imparting the lessons that the City has learnt."
"Delegates will be able to analyse their transport environment to adopt best practices to suit their unique needs," TCT explains.
UATP President Jack van der Merwe, along with Khibi Manana, chief director for transport at South Africa's National Department of Transport, and City of Cape Town executive mayor Patricia De Lille have confirmed their attendance.
