State-run Cameroon Telecommunications (Camtel) is expanding its mobile network by adding 245 new sites to its existing 473, taking its total to 718 — a 51.8% increase in coverage and capacity.
The expansion follows the arrival last week of 35 forty-foot containers of equipment from China, via the Port of Kribi.
The shipment marks the second wave of installations under Camtel's Mobile Network Expansion project, backed by CFAF 44.8 billion in financing and aimed at strengthening the country's mobile infrastructure and bridging the digital divide.
According to Camtel, 122 congested existing sites will also be upgraded, easing pressure on overloaded infrastructure and improving service quality for subscribers.
This phase of the project also includes reinforcement of transport capacity through metropolitan loops and power infrastructure, modernisation of Camtel's billing system, and the introduction of cloud computing capabilities.
Judith Yah Sunday Achidi, Camtel's managing director, has said the expansion is not only about urban connectivity but also about reaching rural communities.
By densifying coverage in peri-urban and village areas, Camtel aims to extend the benefits of digital access — services, knowledge and economic opportunities — beyond major cities.
The expansion comes as Camtel, which has grown to 2.08 million mobile subscribers, continues to trail rivals MTN and Orange by a wide margin in both subscriber numbers and revenue.
Three years ago, mobile network operators in Cameroon, under the Cameroon Association of Mobile Telephony Operators — which includes Camtel, MTN and Orange — pledged to share network infrastructure and invest 156 billion CFA francs in additional equipment and infrastructure.
