Cameroon is betting big on artificial intelligence (AI) to power its digital economy objectives, and it is looking for young innovators to embrace the challenge.

This week, Minette Libom Li Likeng, minister of posts and telecommunications, launched the fourth edition of ICT Innovation Week, a national initiative aimed at speeding the country's digital transformation through local technology solutions.

The program, titled "Mobilising Artificial Intelligence for an Ambitious Digital Transformation That Meets the Needs of Our Country, Cameroon," runs until June 27.

The week revolves around a competition for the best ICT project, which is aimed at young Cameroonian innovators with projects that use AI to bring real solutions to the country's societal challenges.

Applications are open until 16 June via www.ictinnovationweek.cm, and entries are expected to addresses real-world challenges in strategic sectors such as health, education, agriculture, finance, cyber security, governance, and public services.

The minister said: “The aim is to mobilise young Cameroonians around a project that will establish the country as a major stakeholder in digital innovation in Africa, particularly in the emerging field of ethical and inclusive artificial intelligence.

“This year’s ICT Innovation Week encourages collective reflection on the responsible integration of AI on our public policies, business, social services and institutions. “It’s a platform to prepare Cameroon’s youth to solve tomorrow’s problems today.”
