Botswana is in advanced talks to host the SADC's regional internet exchange, which would strengthen its position as the bloc's primary digital gateway.
The country's national fibre network operator, Botswana Fibre Network (BoFiNet), is working with the SADC Secretariat on the matter.
Keabetswe Segole, CEO of BoFiNet, stated that the competition for the bloc's internet exchange comes against the backdrop of the company's durable fibre network developed over the past 12 years.
The capacity comprise various undersea cables as well as multi-route terrestrial networks that traverse across South Africa and Namibia.
He stated that the wide network, together with the company's newly developed Digital Delta Data Centre, creates a 'world-class ecosystem' capable of serving as a gateway into SADC.
“We are hoping to house the SADC Internet regional exchange here in Botswana,” said Segole, citing that BoFiNet is optimistic to clinch the deal during the launch of the company’s Digital Delta Data Centre.
“BoFinet and one company in Zimbabwe have been shortlisted,” said Segole highlighting the two companies have gone to the last part of the evaluation.
He further said the data centre is important in the global ecosystem and presents an opportunity for small and medium enterprises, such as content creators and small e-commerce businesses.
“As a matter of fact, Botswana's position within the SADC region makes data centre more ideal as a peering point for customers in the countries north of Botswana.”
