Botswana is seeking strategic, international insights into artificial intelligence (AI), computing, data centre infrastructure and next-generation digital technologies.
This is part of efforts to accelerate the Southern African country’s digital transformation.
David Tshere, minister of communications and innovation, is on working visits to China and Austria till April 19 to explore opportunities for the Southern African country.
He is attending the 14th China Information Technology Expo 2026, starting in Shenzhen on Thursday (today) until Saturday.
It is a major information and communications technology (ICT) expo showcasing the industry value chain and hosting high-level policy and industry dialogues.
Tshere’s office, confirming the trips, stated, “It (the expo) will also offer exposure to global policy discussions on strengthening national cloud infrastructure, expanding broadband access, enhancing digital service delivery, and shaping governance frameworks for digital innovation ecosystems.”
In addition, Tshere is to undertake a visit to Huawei headquarters, where he will attend technical sessions focused on large-scale digital infrastructure development, AI integration and the development of sustainable ICT ecosystems aligned with Botswana’s national digital priorities.
His office said these engagements present an opportunity to strengthen partnerships that support the implementation of Botswana’s digital transformation programme, while also building digital and innovation skills among the youth to enhance employment opportunities.
Tshere will proceed to Vienna, Austria, on Monday for meetings of the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
“The visits form part of Botswana’s broader strategy to accelerate digital transformation, strengthen international partnerships and position the country within emerging global technology and innovation ecosystems,” his ministry concluded.
