Botswana and Namibia are signing a memorandum of understanding on information and communications technology (ICT) to strengthen bilateral cooperation and cross-border digital integration.
The bilateral agreement establishes a framework for expanding cooperation across digital transformation, emerging technologies, and cybersecurity infrastructure.
The deal builds on existing joint infrastructure initiatives, including landlocked Botswana's access to international bandwidth via Namibia’s West Africa Cable System landing station in Swakopmund.
"The two countries will continue expanding sectoral areas of mutual interest to incorporate new areas of cooperation in the field of ICT," said David Tshere, minister of communications and innovation in Botswana.
Tshere is signing the agreement alongside his counterpart, Emma Theofelus, minister of information and communication technology in Namibia.
Namibia was among the first countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to reduce mobile roaming charges with Botswana, facilitating cross-border trade.
Physical infrastructure links, including the Trans-Kalahari Fibre and Botswana Kalahari Fibre routes, directly connect Johannesburg and Gaborone to Namibian coastal submarine cable landing points.
The collaboration supports Botswana's strategy to transition toward a digital knowledge economy while bolstering regional connectivity across SADC member states.
