Through the country's law enforcement arm – Botswana Police Service (BPS), a request for expression of interest has been floated inviting information and telecommunications technology companies to participate in a provision of 'Safer City Solutions for Botswana' tender.
According to the expression of interest call, key deliverables of the project are safety and security through live 24/7 data streams from closed circuit traffic cameras.
BPS has confirmed installation of surveillance cameras to ensure safer cities and towns and attributed the project to the Department of Traffic and Road Safety.
Christopher Mbulawa, BPS spokesperson applauded the Department of Traffic and Road Safety for the setting up of surveillance cameras on traffic lights.
"They want to see if they can automate traffic lights and our interests are mainly because we are the law enforcers, but I am not well aware of other areas except traffic lights.
The integrated surveillance cameras will be positioned at strategic locations and monitored from a state of the art Command Control Centre (CCC).
The programme is also expected to be rolled out in phases due to a shortage of funds.
Meanwhile police have recorded reduced number of traffic accidents by 16 %, from 14,191 to 11,920 this year during the period January to September.
