Bayobab and Vodacom have established a strategic fibre interconnection at the Zambia-Mozambique Chanida Border, a bid to boost cross-border connectivity and establish a key fibre route linking inland networks to subsea cable systems on Africa's eastern and western seaboards.
The two firms announced the collaboration over the weekend, stating that the initiative represents a critical step forward in Africa's digital transformation path and was commemorated in the presence of senior government officials and key industry leaders from both countries.
The interconnection will enable direct international connectivity to the recently completed 2Africa submarine cable system, enhance network resilience, and accelerate digital inclusion across Southern Africa.
The parties said the project strengthens regional integration through improved cross border connectivity between the two nations, supporting greater trade, and economic collaboration.
Also, the initiative promotes digital inclusion by expanding broadband access to underserved and remote communities, said the companies.
Zambia's minister of technology and science, Felix Mutati, called the event as historic, representing a significant milestone in the country's digital transformation journey.
He noted that the successful interconnection at Chanida strengthens Zambia’s regional digital footprint, bringing the country’s total fibre connectivity to eight neighbouring countries.
Mutati further commended the MTN digital infrastructure arm and Vodacom Mozambique for their investment and commitment, while underscoring the critical role of both governments in creating an enabling environment through clear policies, sound legal frameworks, and progressive regulation.
Simon Karikari, managing director of Vodacom Mozambique said: "This partnership strengthens Mozambique’s digital backbone and expands the capacity required to support growing demand for reliable connectivity. By enhancing cross border resilience, we are accelerating access to high quality digital services that drive economic growth and support the government’s internet for all ambition by 2030.”
Similarly, Lillian Mutwalo, Bayobab Zambia managing director: "This interconnection is a game-changer for Zambia and the region. By creating a seamless link to the 2Africa cable system, we are positioning Zambia as a regional hub for connectivity and enabling businesses and communities to thrive in the digital economy.”
