Bayobab, the digital infrastructure arm of MTN Group, has been shortlisted for the Best African Connectivity Provider award at the 2025 Global Connectivity Awards (GCAs), set to take place in London next month.
The nomination comes as the GCAs celebrate over two decades of recognising innovation in global connectivity, following a record-breaking 418 nominations this year.
Reacting to the announcement yesterday, Bayobab said it was pleased to be recognised for driving innovation and connectivity across Africa.
“With over 127,000 km of fibre and 37.9 Tbps data capacity, we are proud to connect over 50 African countries through smart infrastructure, AI-driven operations, and open platforms,” reads its statement
A wholly owned MTN Group company, Bayobab has become a cornerstone of Africa’s digital transformation, building robust infrastructure that underpins connectivity across the continent.
Last year, its network expanded to 61 Points of Presence in 27 countries, enabling more than 4 500 roaming services and delivering billions of voice minutes and SMS messages.
The nomination also highlights the impact of Mazen Mroué, who was appointed CEO of Bayobab in January 2025 after the departure of founding chief executive Frédéric Schepens.
Since taking over, Mroué has focused on strengthening Bayobab’s infrastructure resilience, deepening partnerships, and driving AI-enabled growth strategies.
Speaking earlier this year, Mroué expressed his delight at leading the organisation and pledged to vigorously work towards connecting Africa.
“I am truly honoured to lead this incredible organisation. Our team remains focused on delivering reliability, quality, and innovation as we grow our impact in Africa and beyond,” said.
Bayobab’s recognition at the GCAs underscores MTN Group’s broader Ambition 2025 strategy to position Africa as a global connectivity hub.
Head Judge Carl Roberts praised the calibre of nominees when he pointed out that the 2025 Global Connectivity Awards have showcased remarkable progress across the telecoms industry.
“The innovation and creativity we’ve seen are a testament to the resilience and forward-thinking nature of companies like Bayobab,” said Roberts
As anticipation builds for October’s ceremony, Mroué is confident that Bayobab’s shortlisting cements its reputation as one of Africa’s most influential digital infrastructure players.
