Algeria is strengthening its start-up ecosystem through the launch of StartAlgeria, a capacity-building programme for entrepreneur support organisations (ESOs).
StartAlgeria is a joint initiative between venture capital firm Flat6Labs and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, in partnership with the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-Enterprises.
The programme is designed to equip Algerian ESOs that support pre-seed and seed-stage start-ups with the expertise, frameworks and networks needed to contribute to a stronger, more competitive entrepreneurship ecosystem in the North African country and help start-ups expand into global markets.
StartAlgeria will pilot its first cohort, focusing on incubators in the capital, Algiers.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Algeria's innovation and investment ecosystem.
While the country has increased support for start-ups through dedicated government programmes and regulatory reforms, access to early-stage funding, mentorship and market networks remains a challenge for many entrepreneurs, placing greater emphasis on the role of incubators and other support organisations.
The alliance behind the project said StartAlgeria comes at a key moment for Algeria's entrepreneurship landscape, with a focus on improving the way ESOs operate through international best practices adapted to each organisation's needs, a community-driven approach centred on peer learning, and stronger connections with investors, policymakers and key stakeholders.
Following a call for applications, the selected ESOs will go through a structured programme comprising workshops and masterclasses covering key areas such as start-up selection, programme design and delivery, and investment readiness.
In addition to the core programme, participating ESOs will benefit from six months of post-programme mentorship, focusing on areas such as fundraising strategy, partnership development, financial sustainability and programme improvement.
In a statement, the trio backing the project noted that the goal of this sustained engagement is to create a lasting impact on how Algerian ESOs operate and what they can offer the start-ups they champion.
Yehia Houry, CEO of Flat6Labs, said: "Algeria's start-up ecosystem is demonstrating remarkable potential and a rapidly growing level of maturity, driven by an ambitious new generation of founders, increasing institutional support and a strong national commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship."
Houry continued: "The opportunity today lies in further empowering entrepreneurship support organisations to match this momentum by strengthening their ability to identify and nurture high-potential start-ups, deliver impactful and results-driven programmes, and create stronger connections between entrepreneurs and sources of capital. With the right support structures in place, Algeria is well positioned to become one of the leading innovation hubs in the region."
Hacıbeyoğlu Ceren , World Bank Group resident representative for Algeria, said: "Algeria's entrepreneurial community is among the most dynamic and vibrant in the region, and the potential is not just real, it is ready to scale.
"Through StartAlgeria, we are committed to ensuring that the organisations standing behind founders are equipped with the tools, frameworks and expertise to take them from early ideas to investment-ready ventures.
"This programme is a direct expression of IFC's long-term confidence in Algeria's private sector and in the ecosystem's capacity to produce the next generation of high-impact companies."
Similarly, Noureddine Ouadah, minister of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-Enterprises, said: "The launch of StartAlgeria marks an important step in reinforcing Algeria's start-up support ecosystem.
"By strengthening the capabilities of ESOs, we are investing in the long-term growth, resilience and international competitiveness of Algerian start-ups. This initiative reflects our shared ambition to build a dynamic, innovation-driven economy and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs across the country."
This IFC programme is implemented in partnership with the Government of the Netherlands.
