Airtel Uganda and the government have discussed ways to expand digital connectivity, increase smartphone access and accelerate the country’s digital economy.
A delegation from the telecoms operator met Justine Kasule Lumumba, minister of information and communication technology and national guidance, as part of ongoing engagement between government and industry stakeholders.
The discussions focused on digital inclusion, innovation and expanding access to technology-enabled services, according to the ministry.
Soumendra Sahu, managing director and chief executive officer of Airtel Uganda, led the company’s delegation during the meeting.
Airtel Uganda said it reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Uganda’s digital transformation agenda, including expanding smartphone access as mobile devices become increasingly important for education, financial services, entrepreneurship and participation in the digital economy.
“We are grateful to the minister for recognising Airtel Uganda’s continued contribution to connecting communities through investments in network expansion, digital innovation and programmes that empower schools, young people and underserved communities across the country,” said Airtel Uganda.
The operator is one of Uganda’s largest telecommunications providers, with its network expansion, digital services and financial technology offerings forming part of the country’s broader connectivity drive.
Through its Airtel Money platform, the company provides mobile financial services and supports digital payments, while its partnerships with government agencies include rural connectivity initiatives and digital education programmes.
