Two of Gabon’s biggest telecoms operators, Airtel and Moov Africa-Gabon Télécom, have signed a memorandum of understanding to share network infrastructure.
According to a statement from the Ministry of digital Economy, digitalisation and Innovation, the agreement was signed on Thursday.
The cooperation is set to enhance digital services, by improving network coverage, while also reducing deployment costs and optimising investments.
Research from Datareportal shows that there were 3.2 million mobile subscribers in early 2025. The country also has 1.84 million Internet users meaning an Internet penetration rate of 71.9% of the total population.
Mark Alexandre Doumba, minister of Digital Economy, digitisation and Innovation, welcomed the deal and emphasised the commitment of the general management of the telcos in making the initiative a reality.
The ministry highlighted that the deal reflects the broader vision of Gabon president Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, to bolster the nation’s digital economy and make the country more globally competitive.
"The objective is twofold: to offer better network availability and limit the anarchic multiplication of pylons that sometimes degrade the visual landscape," said Zouheir Jorio, CEO of Moov Africa-Gabon Telecom, as quoted by publication, Gabon Review.
Airtel Gabon CEO Tom Gutjahr added: "We remain competitors, but some realities require collaboration. Sharing telecommunications towers means making digital services more accessible and affordable for all.”
