Airtel Malawi is concerned that a lack of foreign currency is impeding the company's ability to meet a government directive to upgrade its services.

The country's largest operator emphasised the currency constraints when hosting minister of information and communications technology, Dr Shadric Namalomba, at Airtel's headquarters in Lilongwe.

Abdul Shaik, acting managing director, expressed concern, saying that the constraints are delaying the importation of crucial network equipment, as well as fibre cuts caused by vandalism and road construction works that impede service delivery.

Nonetheless, during the meeting, Shaik reiterated Airtel Malawi's strong commitment to enhancing network performance and expanding coverage across the country.

Shaik also stated that Airtel Malawi is awaiting feedback from the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) on the planned launch of Starlink Satellite Direct to Cell services, which are expected to close coverage gaps in rural and underserved areas and ensure service continuity during network outages.

In response, the minister promised government's assistance in enabling forex access to improve Airtel Malawi's service delivery.

He also agreed to work with MACRA on the approval of Starlink Direct to Cell services.

The Minister also urged the people to stop vandalising communications infrastructure, citing the harmful impact such activities have on service quality.

Despite these challenges, Airtel Malawi said it will continue to invest in new sites, increase capacity in high-traffic areas, and undertake ongoing network modernisation activities.

“We thank the Minister for his guidance and support, and we remain firmly committed to delivering an improved and reliable customer experience for all Malawians,” Airtel said in statement..
