Zambia reports that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) has enhanced its tax revenue collecting capacity by 60% over the last two years.
Felix Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, revealed the boost in revenue collection during an AI lecture in the capital, Lusaka.
"AI has given the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRa) more tools to increase revenue collection and tax compliance," Mutati explained during his speech on Tuesday.
At the beginning of 2024, ZRA announced that it had collected K100,6 billion (US3,89 billion in taxes). This is the highest total to date.
Also speaking at the event in Lusaka, ZRA commissioner general, Dingani Banda, said AI had enhanced fraud detection.
“ZRA is able to analyse importers and exporters online and (technology can) detect fraud faster than a human can do,” Banda said.
