Three South African cities Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Durban are among the top five most active tweeting cities on the continent, according to a research study.
The study dubbed 'How Africa Tweets' -- which was conducted by strategic communications firm Portland Communications -- also found that Egyptian cities Cairo and Alexandria are among the most active cities on Twitter in Africa.
'How Africa Tweets' is Portland's second study to determine the use of Twitter in Africa. The first study, which was released in 2012 was more focused on the most active African countries on Twitter, while the second one looks at the most active African cities on the social network.
According to Portland, it analysed geo-located tweets originating from Africa during the final three months of 2013.
The London based firm then found Johannesburg to be the most active African city with 344,215 geo-located tweets during that period.
Ekurhuleni (situated east of Johannesburg) followed with 264,172 tweets and then Cairo with 227,509 tweets, the study revealed.
Durban and Alexandria made up the remainder of the top five most active cities in Africa with 163,019 and 159,534 tweets respectively.
Kenyan capital Nairobi came in at sixth position in Africa, but was the most active city in East Africa with 123,078 geo-located tweets in Q4 of 2013.
Meanwhile, West Africa's Accra in Ghana was the seventh most active on the continent with 78,575 geo-located tweets.
Other information revealed in the study shows that English, French and Arabic are the most common languages on Twitter in Africa, and Tuesdays and Fridays are the most active tweeting days on the continent.
In addition, the day of former president Nelson Mandela’s death, 5 December 2013, had the highest volume of geo-located tweets in Africa during that period.
Football is the most discussed topic on Twitter in Africa, with Johannesburg’s Orlando Pirates being the most mentioned team.
