Kenya will host the Global ICT Capacity Building Symposium (CBS-2016) after it formalised arrangements with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in an agreement signed by ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao and the Director-General of the Communications Authority of Kenya, Francis Wangusi.
The Symposium, organised by the Telecommunication Development Bureau of ITU, will take place between 6 – 8 September with the theme Embracing Capacity Building Opportunities in the digital Era.
Two pre-conference events will be held on 5 September dedicated to the topics of "Capacity Building in Internet Governance" and "Regulators as Enablers and Beneficiaries of Capacity Building."
CBS-2016 is the first global event focusing on new skill requirements in the digital era following the adoption by global leaders of the Sustainable Development Goals set for implementation by 2030 with 169 targets.
"The symposium presents an opportunity for the ICT community to reflect on building competencies that can help accelerate the development agenda using ICTs," said Wangusi. "As the home to many ICT innovations, we have much to showcase and share with the global ICT fraternity."
The agenda includes a roundtable to address key policy issues relating to human capacity building priorities in the ICT sector for achieving the SDGs and dialogue that will focus on the need to forge multi-stakeholder partnerships for capacity building in an ever-changing digital environment.
"ICTs have an extraordinary potential to accelerate the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and it is important to provide opportunities for everyone to acquire the specialised skills needed to engage in and benefit from the telecommunication/ICT sector," said Zhao.
