The African iGaming Alliance (AIA) has named Peter Emolemo Kesitilwe, former CEO of the Botswana Gambling Authority, as its inaugural chief executive.

The former regulator’s appointment was endorsed yesterday by board members of the AIA, who said it was a positive step towards steering the continent’s fast-growing online gaming sector.

Founded by Betway, 888Africa, SportyBet and betPawa, the AIA was established to provide a single platform for collaboration between operators, regulators, governments and service providers.

The AIA claims that its charter prioritises responsible gambling, fair competition, and sustainable tax frameworks.

iGaming is one of Africa’s fastest-expanding digital industries, valued at over $5 billion annually and employing more than 50 000 people. Licensed operators are active in at least 20 African countries, from South Africa and Kenya to Ghana and Nigeria.

As a qualified accountant, Kesitilwe joined the Botswana Gambling Authority in 2016 as CFO before becoming CEO in 2023, where he spearheaded reforms of the Betting and Lotteries Act and strengthened the country’s licensing regime. Last month, according to Focus Gaming News, Kesitilwe was suddenly suspended by the Botswana Gambling Authority in a move ‘mired in controversy’.

“I look forward to working with regulators and policymakers to build a vibrant, sustainable and competitive industry that upholds the highest standards of responsible gambling and consumer protection,” said Kesitilwe.

The new AIA CEO’s immediate task will be to establish a committee in partnership with Gaming Advisory Africa, bringing together more than 10 regulators and seven industry associations to harmonise standards and drive responsible growth.
