Africa’s rapid digital growth has played a central role in pushing Bharti Airtel past the 650 million customer milestone, cementing its position as the world’s second-largest telecom operator.
According to GSMA Intelligence, with 179 million users across 14 African markets, the continent has become one of the key drivers of Airtel’s expansion, highlighting its rising influence in shaping global connectivity and mobile innovation.
From Nigeria and Kenya to Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, Airtel’s footprint across Africa has become a critical engine of its growth story.
The company acknowledged the importance of the continent in the milestone yesterday, stating that “Africa is a major part of this story, driving both scale and impact.”
Airtel Africa has evolved into more than just a telecom network. With integrated mobile voice, high-speed data and international roaming services, it provides what the company describes as a “vital digital lifeline” for millions.
This is particularly significant in regions where traditional infrastructure has lagged, positioning the giant telco as a backbone of everyday communication and commerce.
Even more transformative is Airtel Money, now serving over 52 million customers across the continent.
The platform has become a powerful tool for financial inclusion, enabling banking and instant payments for millions who were previously excluded from formal financial systems.
In many African markets, mobile money is not just a convenience but the primary gateway to the digital economy.
Beyond terrestrial networks, Airtel is also pushing the boundaries of connectivity through partnerships with Eutelsat, OneWeb and SpaceX.
By leveraging Low Earth Orbit satellites through partnerships with Starlink, the company is extending high-speed, low-latency broadband to remote rural communities, as well as maritime and aviation sectors, areas historically left behind in the connectivity race.
Gopal Vittal, executive vice chairman of Bharti Airtel, commented on the telco's growth: “Achieving the milestone of 650 million customers is a great responsibility for us to serve our customers better every day.”
He added that Airtel will continue to raise the bar on innovation, reliability, and experience so that every customer interaction is an opportunity to earn trust and deliver value.
Headquartered in India, Airtel operates across countries in Africa and Asia, with networks reaching over two billion people.
