The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have moved their joint AI 10 Billion initiative from concept to on-the-ground deployment.

According to the parties, the ambitious framework aims to orchestrate $1 billion annually over the next decade, transforming Africa’s digital potential into measurable economic output and industrial productivity. Following consultations at the bank’s headquarters, the strategic partnership is transitioning from its February launch in Nairobi into direct multi-country execution.

The initiative directly targets a massive economic frontier, as the parties say that inclusive artificial intelligence (AI) adoption could inject up to $1 trillion into the continent’s economy by 2035. Nearly 60% of that value is expected to be concentrated in agriculture, retail, manufacturing, finance, and healthcare.

With over 300 million young Africans set to enter the labour force within the next ten years, the programme focuses on worker productivity and regional competitiveness as the primary metrics of success, projecting the creation of up to 25 million new jobs.

Rather than relying on high-level rhetoric, the undertaking addresses the foundational bottlenecks holding back local tech ecosystems. While capital already exists across governments, development finance institutions, and private investors, the initiative bridges the gap by channelling those resources into bankable projects for energy, data infrastructure, compute capacity, and digital skills.

To achieve this, the initiative deploys a unified three-stage country framework. It first diagnoses national productivity opportunities through targeted sectoral analyses, then prepares and de-risks public and private projects until they are fully ready for capital deployment, and finally convenes a dedicated investment platform bringing together regional economic communities, commercial investors, and philanthropies.

While the exact countries have not been named, rollout is aimed to begin across five pilot nations before scaling to 20 countries by the end of 2027.

“Productivity is one of the key measures by which the AfDB judges the promise of AI. Through AI 10 Billion, and in partnership with UNDP, we will align public and private capital behind that objective, so that the benefits of AI translate into competitiveness, employment and inclusive growth across the continent,” said Solomon Quaynor, Vice-President for Private Sector, Infrastructure and Industrialisation at the African Development Bank.
