World cup final TV-audience in five African nations tops 27.4 million
The FIFA World Cup 2014 final, which took place on Sunday, saw 27.4 million football fans in Africa tune in to television sets to catch the Germany-Argentina game.
This is according to real-time mobile survey service GeoPoll.
GeoPoll uses its 'Audience Measurement Service', a mobile survey service, to determine the viewership numbers in countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana.
And GeoPoll says Africa’s most populous nation Nigeria came out tops with the highest number of viewers that tuned in to watch the game. More than 15 million Nigerian fans stayed up to watch the game, according to GeoPoll stats.
In second place was Kenya with 4,136 000 viewers, followed by Tanzania with 3,849 000.
Ghana and Uganda each attracted 3,409 000 and 1,625 000 viewers respectively.
But GeoPoll’s numbers are low regarding the populations of these countries. Nigeria; for example, has around 170 million people.
When asked about the veracity of the numbers then, a GeoPoll spokesperson told ITWeb Africa that his company is confident in their numbers.
"Radio may indeed be a factor."
"Also, it had been several rounds since Nigeria and Ghana were eliminated, so it's possible that interest had not picked up much,” said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson added, “Also, we found that Brazil was a very popular team to follow, so that may explain it to some extent."
