Kenya promotes ICT standards, use of local domains

Kenya's ICT Authority and Kenya Network Information Center are working together to promote ICT standards and increase the usage of.ke domains.

Kenya's ICT Authority is collaborating with the Kenya Network Information Center (KeNIC) to promote ICT standards, facilitate skills transfer, and increase the use of.ke domains.

This three-year partnership, launched on Wednesday, aims to increase public trust in government digital projects by leveraging the combined experience and resources of both institutions to accelerate the country's digital transformation.

One of the MoU's requirements is for KeNIC to raise awareness about the importance and benefits of using.go.ke email addresses and domains, while the ICT Authority will encourage the use of.go.ke email in government ministries and state enterprises to enhance uptake and compliance.

ICT Authority CEO Stanley Kamanguya underlined the significance of the collaboration, saying: "This MoU will help us address some of the strategic issues that we are facing as we walk in the era of digital transformation. ‘’

‘’There are two key things which we shall be looking to carry out under this MoU which includes skilling and reskilling of our staff. We shall also be looking how we address the issue of digital governance.”

He continued: “We have carefully looked at the security issue and we shall work together to ensure these domains are secure so that businesses can also register this. We believe that this collaboration will go a long way not only to support government institutions but also the private sector for them to be able to register on the .ke domain.’’

Under the MoU, KeNIC will also train ICT Authority technical staff on the Domain Name System ecosystem and Domain Name System Security.

The partnership will also focus on improving digital skills and literacy among public sector staff and citizens through cooperative training programs and awareness initiatives. The ICT Authority is a government-owned business tasked with streamlining and managing ICT functions throughout the government. In contrast, KeNIC oversees the.KE domains
