Scramble for Kenya's digital TV subscribers
The fight for subscribers has begun in earnest, with Multichoice's brand, GOTv slashing its prices ahead of the Kenyan digital migration set to begin on 31st December 2014.
The company noted that there was a high spike in demands for the set top boxes since the announcement of the digital migration deadline, but declined to announce how many subscribers it currently has.
The general manager of GOTv Kenya Felix Kyengo estimated that sales since the deadline announcement had increased by between 20 and 30 percent. He said that the company expects more sales with the decrease of the price.
Decoders now retail at Kshs 1799 (US$20), inclusive of two months subscription, from Kshs 3,399 (US$44 ). This is an introductory offer for the short window period Kenyans in Nairobi have to migrate. However, the GO Antennae will retail separately at Kshs 1,000 (US$11).
Users will also be able to opt out of the subscription based packages and commit to a non-subscription package that will have free-to-air channels, on the expiry of their monthly subscription.
The company says that it has 2 million decoders in the Kenyan market and can comfortably supply Nairobi and its environs.
Other companies such as Zuku TV have launched media campaigns in getting subscribers ahead of the 31st December deadline for analogue switch off.
"We have been working on our network and now we can confirm that our network is available over all areas in Kenya," Kyengo said.
