Cameroon audits Camtel's network for quality of service

Cameroon's telecoms regulator is conducting an operational audit of Camtel's national fibre optic network in response to concerns about the quality of services provided by mobile phone companies including MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroon. 

Camtel, which is owned by the government, apologised to its customers earlier this week for the disruption of voice and data services on its mobile network and stated that technical teams were fully mobilised to repair the situation. 

Now, the regulator said it has been mandated to ensure that the telco's network is rehabilitated to improve performance. 

TRB director General Philemon Zoo Zame said technical teams from MTN and Orange were collaborating with Camtel to immediately restore optimal services. 

In a statement, Zame said: “TRB has received instructions from the government to carry out an operational audit of Camtel's national fibre optic network.

“Although this operation is still ongoing, the initial results of the audit show that this national fibre optic infrastructure is in a state of continuous degradation, and the current conditions of its maintenance need to be reassessed.”

In the case of MTN and Orange, the regulator pointed out that network disruption was primarily caused by intermittent and insufficient supply of electrical power to transmission sites, which was exacerbated by logistical challenges in delivering fuel.
