The UK launches £1.9m technology project in Nigeria, Ghana

The Sankore initiative would provide funds to the governments of Ghana and Nigeria to encourage the commercialisation of innovation solutions.

The United Kingdom (UK) has announced up to £1.9 million in financing to strengthen science, technology, and innovation in Ghana and Nigeria through its West Africa Research and Innovation Hub.

The Sankore initiative would provide funds to the governments of Ghana and Nigeria to encourage the commercialisation of innovation solutions, strengthen innovation policy, and improve government digital service delivery.

The project is part of the UK-Africa Technology and Innovation Partnerships Programme, which aims to boost economic growth and develop innovation systems in Ghana and Nigeria.

According to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, the Sonkore project will encourage collaboration between universities, research institutions, and private sector in order to generate new technologies.

Commenting on the project, Ghana's minister for environment, science, and technology, Ophelia Mensah Hayfors, stated: “This initiative is one of many initiatives the Ministry with the support of the UK Government intends to bridge the funding gap for Ghana’s Technological Innovation. “

Harriet Thompson, British High Commissioner to Ghana, believes the relationship demonstrates the UK's commitment to collaborating with African countries on science, technology, and innovation.

"This grant will further strengthen our existing partnerships on science, tech and innovation," said Thompson.
