The number of registrations for Nigeria's Country Code Top Level Domain name (ccTLD) 'dot ng' has hit 100,000, according to the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA).

President of NiRA, Sunday Folayan, said with over one million domain names, South Africa is the only country in Africa with more registered ccTLD domain names than Nigeria.

In an earlier interview with ITWeb Africa, Folayan said one of the reasons why there was low uptake of .ng domain names was that some Nigerians believed that.com is superior to .ng and would rather register their domains under the generic classifications such as .com, .org etc.

"NIRA has taken on the task of dispelling most of these false assumptions by extensive consultations with stakeholders and different segments of the economy, to ensure that the various issues are properly identified and addressed," said Folayan.

NiRA's head of business development, Kemi Adepoju, said more still needs to be done to improve the ccTLD's adoption in Nigeria.

In a related development, the CEO of NiRA, Edith Udeagwu, has announced that Nigeria will be hosting the 2017 open public policy meetings of the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) from 27 November to 4 December in Lagos.

AFRINIC is the regional internet registry (RIR) for Africa. It hosts two open public policy meetings every year in various locations throughout its service region.

According to Udeagwu, discussions will include Internet Protocol (IP) development and migration from IPv4 to IPv6 to avoid internet blackout.

"Nigeria must do everything possible to avoid internet shut, saying that the consequences are dire," said Abubakar Muhammed, NiRA's head of technical department.
