Zamtel's acting CEO defiant over allegations

Acting CEO of Zamtel (Zambia Telecommunications Company) Sydney Mupeta has rubbished allegations of mismanagement and incompetence.

On 1 June a defiant Mupeta responded to allegations by workers that he had failed to communicate his business turnaround strategy with staff and senior managers, and the venture was heading for collapse under his leadership, and said these allegations were made by a few people who had their own motives.

The Zamtel executive added that the company's subscriber numbers and revenue have increased since he took over three months ago.

Mupeta has since issued a statement claiming the company "now has the positive energy that is fuelling its growth", and, in particular, has received unwavering support from the Industrial Development Cooperation and the Ministries of Finance and Communications and Transport.

He said Zamtel has just settled K10.7 million in tax to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and that the company remains committed to settling all outstanding statutory and other obligations in a quickest possible time.

Moreover, according to the statement, the promotion that the company has been running, in addition to the effort and dedication of employees, has led to unprecedented growth in the number of customers to over 1.8 million achieved over a short period of time.

"Thank you once again and let us move together as we aggressively pursue the 2millionth customer before the end of 2017," Mupeta is quoted as saying.

Meanwhile Brian Mushimba, the Minister of Communications, confirmed that he has received complaints from some workers related to the management of the company and said the matter would be looked into soon.

Mupeta took over as Zamtel CEO in an acting capacity following the resignation of Dr. Mupanga Mwanakatwe who headed the company for close to six years.
