Collaboration needed to boost Nigeria's content industry

Telecoms operators and local content developers in Nigeria have stressed the need for an all-inclusive commitment towards the development of the country's content industry.

Adia Sowho, Director of Digital Business at Etisalat Nigeria, said telecoms subscribers are not just consuming more content online, their preference for better quality content is stretching the capacity of the operators.

"We are noticing it on our network and I know other operators are experiencing this also," she said.

Sowho added that competition to provide the cheapest and best packages for the consumer will eventually compel each operator to review their strategies in order to be able to sustain the increasing pressure.

Emeka Akano, CEO/Co-Founder of tech startup firm Jara Mobile, called the attention of stakeholders in the ecosystem to the significantly small portion of digital revenue accruing to local content developers - even though there is increased activity on the various mobile networks. According to Akano, the development was brought about by the less harmonious relationship between operators and local tech service providers.

Sowho stressed that in spite of the large number of local value added services available on the various networks, only a 'handful' are generating revenues. To ensure that local content developers get a significant share of the revenue accruing from their services via the network service providers, she urged them to first ensure that they've significantly grown their products and services before approaching the networks.

App performance

Oye Akindeinde, General Manager of BOOM Player at Tecno Mobile Nigeria said pre-installing apps on mobile phones by manufacturers has proven to be an effective way of boosting the performance of apps in the Nigerian market.

Akindeinde said several locally developed apps that were preinstalled in devices had attracted a large number of users and he urged local app developers to build useful apps and ensure that they are well known in the ecosystem.

"When your app is good and we are hearing about you, we will even be the one contacting you," he said.

The localisation of platforms and content piracy have also been identified as key priorities for the ecosystem going forward.
