Lusaka looks to e-ticketing to curb fraud

Zambian capital city Lusaka could introduce an automated electronic ticketing system to avert rampant fraud in its Intercity Bus Terminus and with the selling of football tickets.

A team of councillors and staff from the Lusaka City Council (LCC) are in South Africa to study the operations of automated ticketing system for the country.

The study tour, conducted under the auspices of Vane Technologies of South Africa, is being undertaken with a view of introducing an electronic ticketing system in Zambia.

Delegation leader, Given Lubinda, said the tour is also acting as a due diligence exercise on the company.

Lubinda said the country’s Intercity Bus Terminus handled a big number of both vehicles and people and that there was need for fool-proof system in order to increase accountability.

He said the world is becoming cashless in its transactions, and that Zambia cannot be left behind.

“If our people are able to buy bus tickets and other things through vending machines, then we will reduce on the cases of theft. This is something that we will roll-out to other parts of the country if it succeeds in Lusaka,” Lubinda said.
