Zambian govt demands report on DVDs disappearance

Zambia's government has demanded a report from the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and Anti-Corruption Commission on the investigations of the disappearance of DVDs at Mwami border post in Chipata valued at more than $16 million.

Acting minister of Information and Broadcasting Inonge Wina said the Zambian government needs a progress report of the investigations as one year has elapsed since the investigations were launched.

“We need a progress report of their investigations since one year has elapsed from the time these investigations were instituted,” Wina said.

According to Malawian police, suspects were arrested after they were found illegally importing the DVDs in the country using a chartered plane. The plane was intercepted at Kamuzu International Airport by Malawian officials.

But the suspects later escaped from police custody with the contraband DVDs, after they were handled over to the Zambian authorities at the Mwami border post.

ZRA officials have failed to explain how the suspects and the goods disappeared from their custody.

This prompted the Zambian government to set up a probe team to investigate how the DVDs and the suspects disappeared from the custody of police and ZRA officials.

The Zambian government said the DVDs should have been destroyed after being confiscated because they were pirated.

According to the ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Zambian government was losing millions of kwacha through the illegal exportation of pirated DVDs.
