An increase in local demand for a clearer, cost-effective video communication solution has prompted Safaricom to launch its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Video over LTE (ViLTE) service in Kenya.

The new service will leverage the company's existing 4G network and users will be able to receive voice and video calls without being charged extra, according to the company.

"Today we are proud to introduce the latest calling technology across the country which will enable Kenyans to make video and voice calls over 4G," said Sylvia Mulinge, chief customer officer at Safaricom.

The VoLTE service is an advantage over the typical standard call because the 4G connection is maintained.

Safaricom points out that both the caller and the receiver need to have 4G SIM card and a 4G-enabled phone to make calls on the network.

The company plans to add more LTE base stations in the country, to stand at 5,000 by the end of this year.

Bob Collymore, chief executive officer at Safaricom, said, "We increased our sites by 9% year-on-year, and our 3G and 4G coverage to 93% and 57% respectively, and we have plans to accelerate our 4G roll out this coming year to cover every town in the country."

The company introduced VoLTE and ViLTE devices in the market, priced at between Kshs 3,999 to Kshs 5,999, under its Neon low cost smartphone brand.
