Bankers association warns Zambia of Easter fraud

Following a spate of Automated Teller machine (ATM) fraud that has rocked Barclays Bank Zambia; the Bankers Association of Zambia has warned that the country may experience increased fraud during the upcoming Easter holiday.

Bankers Association of Zambia chief executive officer David Chewe has said that ATM card holders in the country should be careful when withdrawing money.

This comes after Barclays Bank Zambia has been hit by Automated Teller machine (ATM) fraud that has reportedly resulted in the loss of huge sums of money.

Currently, the bank is said to be investigating its information technology staff after unknown people allegedly tampered with an ATM control system and fraudulently withdrew large sums of money from one of its branches in the town of Kabwe.

In another case, Barclays Bank Zambia has been dragged to court by a customer over alleged fraudulent transactions that resulted in the loss of the client’s money.

The client, based in the capital Lusaka, wants the court to compel the bank to pay him damages for failing to ‘provide security’ of his money in the account.

Chewe told Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation on a news broadcast yesterday that the association is still trying to get to the bottom of the matter as to whether there are other locations where the fraud could have happened in the country.

“There are reports that something happened in Kabwe and we are trying to get to the bottom of the matter as to which other location this could have happened,” Chewe said.
