London-based satellite ISP Avanti Communications has signed a five-year agreement with telecommunications services provider MGI Global Services to extend satellite broadband services to Angola, Chad and South Sudan.

A joint statement issued by the companies reads: "The partnership will improve the penetration of reliable satellite broadband in these countries, and significantly increase access to the internet."

According to the agreement MGI will deploy Avanti's HYLAS 4 satellite that provides Ka-band satellite technology.

The agreement makes MGI one of Avanti's exclusive master distributors for HYLAS 4 services and capacity.

MGI's Associate Director Ilija Reymond described the agreement as an affirmation of the company's commitment to providing governments, NGOs, businesses and communities in sub-Saharan Africa with reliable telecommunications and telecommunications services.

Avanti sent its HYLAS 4 telecommunications satellite into space in April 2018, via an Ariane rocket. The satellite, manufactured by Orbital ATK, now complements Avanti's sub-Saharan coverage, secured in part by the HYLAS 2, launched in 2012.

Avanti chief executive officer Kyle Whitehill, said: "HYLAS 4, the latest addition to our satellite fleet, was launched to complete our coverage of Sub-Saharan Africa. We are delighted to be working with the MGI team as a preferred partner to drive the realisation of our mission to deliver broadband access to help liberate the potential of communities and businesses wherever they are located."

The latest agreement is expected to expand MGI's service portfolio, while enabling it to continue to support digital transformation in Africa.

Reymond added: "We're excited to partner with Avanti to further expand our service portfolio and to continue supporting the digital transformation in Africa."
