The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) of Nigeria is investigating an alleged breach of citizens' data on the National Identity Number (NIN) database, which was allegedly caused by the XpressVerify website.

Yesterday, the Commission informed citizens that it is conducting a thorough investigation into the alleged breach to see whether any of its "tokenisation verification agents had breached the licencing arrangement either directly or through their sub-licensees.”

The NIMC director general and CEO, Abisoye Coker Odusote, ordered the probe.

Coker Adusote underlined the NIMC's commitment to data protection and privacy, stating that "no stone will be left unturned" in ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians' data.

She also stated that top-level security measures are in place to protect the NIN database and each citizen's personal information.

“The commission understands the critical importance of maintaining public trust and confidence in our operations and we will continue to uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability,” Coker Adusote said.
