MTN is celebrating a milestone with the first 5G network in Uganda.

MTN has made history in Uganda by introducing the country's first 5G network.

Today, the business announced the launch, saying increased network capacity will transform Uganda's digital landscape.

"Our first sites went live today in Lugogo and Bugolobi, and all our customers in these areas using 5G-enabled devices can begin to experience the joy and benefits of 5G," says MTN Uganda, adding its teams are hard at work expanding presence across the country.

It adds: "This remarkable journey has been fueled by two years of relentless innovation and fruitful partnerships, establishing a rock-solid foundation to nurture and grow our digital ecosystem."

As the demand for high-quality services grows, the telco is the latest to expand its network in East Africa.

Airtel Kenya launched 5G this month as part of an expansion drive to address the increased demand for internet services.

Airtel Kenya's network architecture currently spans over 3,200 sites, covering 89% of all 47 counties, and will be expanding by 650 sites this year.

Rwanda's two mobile operators, MTN and Airtel, inaugurated 4G LTE networks this week, after the country reversed its decision to rely on a single wholesale network for 4G, 5G, and future technologies.
