Rwanda is positioning itself and the continent as a key participant in AI governance and accessibility.

In support of these initiatives, Rwanda's Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution , in cooperation with the World Economic Forum (WEF), will hold a high-level AI summit in Africa near the end of 2024.

This is to provide a space for focused and collaborative discourse about the role of AI in defining Africa's future.

"The event's primary goal will be to align African countries on common risks, barriers, and opportunities, and, ultimately, devise a unified strategy for AI in Africa," said Paula Ingabire, Minister of Information Communication Technology and Innovation.

She stated that Rwanda's participation in the WEF's AI Governance Alliance, led by President Paul Kagame, intends to ensure that the East African country and continent do not "catch up" in determining the future of AI.

She was speaking at Davos at an event hosted by the two institutions mentioned above.

Cathy Li, WEF's head of AI, Data, and Metaverse, stated that the AI Governance Alliance is ideally positioned to play a critical role in promoting wider access to AI-related resources, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and responsible AI ecosystem globally.

"We must collaborate among governments, the private sector and local communities to ensure the future of AI benefits all," Li stated.
