Usain Bolt runs with Telkom SA

Telkom SA has announced a media partnership with Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt to promote fibre technology. Telkom has released footage of the superstar athlete in his home country of Jamaica last weekend where the athlete is filmed thanking his South African fans for their support along with the announcement.

Telkom is currently rolling out a network of fibre technology around South Africa. The communications services provider also reiterated its commitment to reaching one million homes with fibre by 2018 to expand what it says is already the largest fibre network in the country.

Enzo Scarcella, Chief Marketing Officer at Telkom says the association with Bolt helps drive the message of Telkom's commitment to provide South Africans with the most advanced broadband technology available.

"We believe that Bolt, as the fastest person in the world, will assist us in creating awareness of the speed, consistency and reliability that fibre technology offers," Scarcella adds.

Telkom also noted Bolt's achievements including that he is currently regarded as the fastest person ever and the first man to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records. The reigning Olympic champion for both events, the sprinter is also first man to win six gold medals in sprinting.

The telco appears to be drawing parallels between the athlete's renowned speed and that of their Fibre to the Home (FTTH) which they say allows for download speeds of up to 100Mbps in addition to allowing users to download a standard definition 4.7GB video in under seven minutes.
