Airtel Zambia launches mobile TV app

Airtel Zambia has launched Airtel TV, offering 30 digital channels to subscribers.

According to the company, Airtel TV will be accessible at no charge to pre-paid and post-paid customers with a registered SIM card and a data-enabled headset or device. Users will be able to download the Airtel TV app from Google Play Store or Apple store.

Airtel marketing director Hussam Baday said the new Airtel TV app enables customers to enjoy news on the go as well as other programming such as movies, music, reality shows, children's shows, as well as documentaries which include BBC, Hollywood, Bollywood and Nollywood channels.

"We are pleased to bring to you a one-stop platform which brings to you over 30 live channels and over 800 videos- on-demand with the number expected to increase in the course of the year as we add more entertainment channels to cater for all our customers' preferences," Baday said.

The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) director general Josephine Mapoma added, "The advancement in technology has brought about new ways of creating media content and platforms like mobile service are now able to broadcast TV."

Airtel head of corporate communications Yuyo Kambikambi said the pan-African initiative reaches all markets where Airtel has presence.

Kambikambi said, "The launch of Airtel TV rides on the back of the launch of our 4G network. We were the first operator to have a 100% 4G network in Zambia. So our customers with 4G capable devices as well as SIM cards will not only experience seamless streaming service on Airtel TV but also overall internet usage."

She said according to a Zambia Information and Communications Regulatory Authority (ZICTA) report relevant markets and dominance determination for 2020, there are 9, 084, 189 internet users in Zambia as of the Q3, 2019.

According to Kambikabmi this is the potential addressable market for adoption of multimedia streaming service in the country.
