LTE network launched in Nigeria
West African country Nigeria has its first commercial Long Term Evolution (LTE) service.
But a mobile network has not launched the offering in that country, as internet service provider Spectranet claims to have crossed the LTE line first in that country.
According to Spectranet’s website, its LTE network has become available in the Nigerian capital city of Lagos.
And Spectranet says plans are also in place to roll out a LTE network in the city of Abuja and other states across the country.
Spectranet chief operating officer Atul Ojha has told Nigeria’s This Day newspaper that the company has commenced the migration of its customers from WIMAX to LTE.
Thanks to Spectranet’s offering, Nigeria has joined several African markets that have rolled out LTE in the last two years.
Just this month, mobile operator Econet Wireless announced that it has launched Zimbabwe’s first LTE network.
Prior to the Econet announcement, the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) ‘Evolution to LTE report’, which was released earlier this year, noted that six other countries have LTE networks in Africa.
The six countries are Angola, South Africa, Namibia, Mauritius, Tanzania and Uganda.
