Zuku looking to launch VOD in Kenya

Kenya’s video on demand market should prepare for a major player at the end of the year, as Wananchi owned Zuku aims to launch the service.

Speaking to ITWeb Africa, Richard Alden, chief executive officer of the Wananchi Group said that they would be launching by December this year.

“The service is currently at product development phase and will be ready for piloting and hopefully full roll out before end of 2015,” Alden said.

Already, Zuku’s decoders have capabilities of a video on demand service but currently it is non functional.

“Ours is a business committed to delivering cutting edge entertainment and integrated communication solutions for the fast growing African mass consumer market,” Alden explained.

In July last year, DSTv launched a video renting service on their platform. The service named BoxOffice has seen users rent single titles of movies. American players such as Netflix and Hulu only charge a flat monthly fee for unlimited access to TV series and movies.

Able Wireless, a Kenyan owned company also aims to make streaming movies and series on demand possible through their black box, which is internet enabled.
