E-ticketing launched for Lagos bus system

Nigeria’s largest city Lagos has started using e-ticketing as a mean of payment on its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) transportation system.

The country’s commercial capital has introduced the system on Tuesday morning.

The state government and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), which is the regulator of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Nigeria, say e-ticketing is part enhancing effectiveness along the bus routes.

Dr. Dayo Mobereola, managing director of LAMATA, adds that the measure is part of a 'holistic plan' aimed at returning the BRT operations and experience to its once efficient and effective state when it was first launched in 2008.

E-ticketing payment uses a solution called ‘Lagos Connect,’ a card payment system offering commuters several options.

“With the e-payment system, Lagos Connect, commuters in Lagos will pay lower fare per trip,” said Mobereola.

He says the state government is aware challenges commuters face with the BRT system.

But he explains that steps are being taken to ensure the restoration of efficient and effective service delivery on the system to increase its capacity.
