Kwese launches satellite TV with eye on on-demand service

Kwese is looking to launch Over the Top (OTT) services in partnership with telecom companies across the continent to open an avenue for streaming services.

Neo Lekgabo, Chief Marketing Officer at Econet Media told ITWeb Africa that the streaming service, Kwese Play, launched in South Africa a fortnight ago, will be available to their African market in due time.

Kwese Play is a Roku-based streaming service that offers Netflix, YouTube and other 100 other channels on-demand.

"We already have agreements with mobile network operators across the continent including Safaricom, Vodafone, MTN and we will be selling our boxes in their shops. On the mobile TV side we will be having special bundles with them (MNO) so that consumers can enjoy mobile TV," said Lekgabo said on the sidelines of the launch of the Kwese TV satellite offering in Kenya.

Lekgabo said the new satellite offering will give consumers more flexible payment options, including a 3-day, 7-day or 30-day payment option for access to their channels.

Outside the subscriptions, Kwese will also offer five free channels and additional free-to-air channels.

Kennedy Ojunga, General Manager at Econet Media Kenya Limited - Kwese TV, said they are offering unique content. "Kwese is premised on the basis of TV anywhere and everywhere. We will give our subscribers full access to a spectrum of programming on up to five smart devices," Ojunga said.

Kwese TV will also offer specialised content such as Viceland and Dreamworks Children channel and also premium sporting events.

The company said they have already contracted 300 installers and 300 vendors to roll out the service in Kenya.

Kwese TV will retail at Kshs 2,960 for 30-day subscription, Kshs 890 for 7 days and Kshs 475 for 3 days. Installation charges will apply separately.

MultiChoice, via its DStv and GOtv brands, continues to dominate Kenya's competitive pay TV market.
