Nigeria’s ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has applauded President Goodluck Jonathan for his ‘initiatives towards technological advancements’ in the West African country.

Party spokesperson, Olisa Metuh, cited the establishment of the National Institute of Construction Technology in Uromi, Edo state, the new national automobile policy and the implementation of power sector reforms among others as highlights of Jonathan’s rule.

Metuh further said technology implementations such as e-governance, the nationwide launch of information communication centres, the promotion of mobile application development by new starters, and the fight against cybercrime are other highlights of Jonathan’s rule.

Metuh subsequently urged Nigerians to continue supporting the PDP, as Metuh argued that it remained ‘the only political party’ in Nigeria that could guarantee a government committed to the national interest and the welfare of citizens.

However, the PDP’s comments come as Goodluck Jonathan is facing an election in 2015 in which analysts say he could lose support owing to his failure to tackle corruption, piracy and oil theft.

Nevertheless, the PDP is standing by Jonathan, especially with regard to his technology policies.

“The party commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his steadfastness in delivering on his transformation agenda and not allowing himself to be distracted by the antics of the opposition," Metuh.

Metuh further said that for Nigeria to become Africa's top economic power-house, the country’s ability to harness technology is key.
