Broadband strategy plans for Zambia

A national broadband strategy is on the cards in Zambia.

Government says it plans to implement a strategy so as to bring down broadband costs in Zambia and fast-track social and economic development in the country.

This is according to Zambia's Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Minister, Yamfwa Mukanga.

He said the Zambian government has already reclassified the ICT chapter in the Revised Sixth National Development Plan (SNDP) from a mere support sector to an economic sector anchored on expansion of the national broadband infrastructure.

Mukanga said the Zambian government intended to increase access and promote widespread deployment of ICT services through the expansion of the nation's telecommunications backbone.

"We are in the process of developing the national broadband strategy that will ensure the provision of to affordable broadband services citizens," said Mukanga.

"This is evident by the reclassification of the ICT chapter in the revised SNDP from a mere support sector to an economic sector," he added.
