Econet Wireless Zimbabwe allegedly suffered a massive data breach this week, including subscribers' personal information.

According to cyber security firm FalconFeeds.io, which posted about the breach on X, a "threat actor claims to be selling the database of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe."

It added: "The leaked data includes 852,791 customer records containing full names, emails, addresses, Twitter, mobile numbers, and more."

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe had not issued an official statement about the alleged breach at the time of publishing.

Industry experts recently cautioned that Africa is becoming a hub for cyber-crime, with cyber threats becoming more diversified and complex.

This week, a Moldovan company allegedly used a flaw in Kenya's government-owned Business Registration Service (BSR) to get access to critical information about shareholders in registered firms.

BRS is the sole custodian of a list of all companies and information for entities registered in Kenya.

According to media sources, B2Bhint, a Moldovan business intelligence agency, sold a 'goldmine' of shareholder data from two million companies, including residential addresses, emails, and phone numbers

In Uganda, police arrested nine Ministry of Finance officials this week in response to a cyber-attack on the country’s central bank.

The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into the country's central bank hack, which happened in November and resulted in the theft of $16.87 million (62 billion shillings).
