Togo market switched on to BBOXX' smart solar
The rapid, well-funded expansion of solar home system provider BBOXX is continuing at pace after it announced it had delivered energy access to over 12,000 people since its launch in Togo six months ago.
BBOXX develops solar home systems coupled with its SMART Solar platform, which brings machine-learning and customer experience optimisation to the electrification of rural Africa.
The company has been busy raising expansion funding, and launched in Togo last December, adding it to existing markets Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria and Cameroon. It also rolled out services in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in January.
BBOXX's launch in Togo, which came about via a partnership with the government to improve electrification rates in rural Togo, was designed to bring electricity to more than two million citizens by 2022.
Initial uptake has been significant, with BBOXX providing energy access to more than 12,000 people in the first six months. It has secured 2,400, with a 45 per cent increase in customers in May alone.
The company also claims to have created jobs for nearly 100 people in local communities in sales and installations, and now serves all regions of Togo. It plans to introduce new appliances, including a solar-powered fan, this month.
"It is really positive to see the impact BBOXX operations has had in Togo in just half a year. We have big ambitions to expand in the country and sell a further 10,000 units by the end of the year," said CEO Mansoor Hamayun.
"It is unacceptable in 2018 that some countries in Africa, like Togo, still have a less than fifty percent electrification rate. Energy poverty is the issue of our age and we are addressing this head on, having provided energy access to 650,000 people globally to date. BBOXX continues to have a tangible impact in the region, enabling greater financial inclusion by providing reliable energy access and delivering power for smartphones, lights and home appliances."
