Instagram chooses South Africa to launch Snapchat-like ‘Bolt’

Bolt, a one-to-one visual messaging app for iOS and Android that is similar to Snapchat, has been launched by Instagram in South Africa.

South Africa is one of three countries where mobile photo and video sharing social networking, Instagram, has decided to launch its first standalone application, Bolt.

The app is also planned to be launched in New Zealand and Singapore.

According to a press statement Bolt will allow Instagram users to capture and send images and videos to friends with just one tap.

“Bolt was built to be fast and simple – it’s for communicating in that moment with people you’re close to, as quickly as possible,” the statement reads.

The statement further notes that Bolt is available from app stores from July 30, 2014.

Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, plans to initially launch the app in the smaller markets of South Africa, New Zealand and Singapore before scaling Bolt to bigger countries such as the US.
