Zimbabwe: Econet Wireless launches low cost browsing

Econet Wireless has introduced low cost web browsing bundles through the Opera Mini browser for its subscribers in a bid to boost revenues from its broadband category.

Executives at the Zimbabwean telco, which now has over 8 million subscribers on its network, have previously identified data as a major pillar around which the company's future revenue generation capacity will be tied.

"Opera Mini Surf bundles are time based whilst normal data bundles are volume based," the company said on its website on Sunday.

It added that "when you use Opera Mini bundles you are not charged for the amount of data or megabytes that you have used" but are instead charged "for the period for which you use the bundles".

Under the new arrangement, subscribers will pay 40 cents for using the internet through Opera Mini for 24 hours. It is accessible through dialling *143#.

There is also the option of paying 95 cents for a three day period. Econet already has unlimited bundles for WhatsApp and Facebook and is currently allowing subscribers to access Twitter on their mobile phones for free.

"The bundle gives the subscriber the ability to browse any website of their choice over the time for which they have subscribed."

Mobile companies are witnessing declining revenues from voice telephony services as a result of the growing usage of cheaper communication alternatives riding on the internet.
