MTN Zambia intends to migrate 274 sites by Saturday 27 March 2021 having recently secured spectrum on the 800 MHz band.

According to a statement from the company, the development will lead to enhanced quality of experience for customers “through improved indoor coverage and network capacity.”

In March this year the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) issued MTN Zambia with the spectrum at a cost of US$13.5-million.

The statement reads: “MTN commends the Government and ZICTA for the award. As MTN we demonstrated our ability to utilize this spectrum when we held it on a temporary basis and we are confident of achieving similar results and thereby further improving the quality of service.”

MTN Zambia CEO Bart Hofker said, “MTN Zambia’s acquisition of additional spectrum is another landmark in our aim to serve our customers as Zambia’s number 1 digital service provider. It will allow us to boost the quality of our services with direct effect and our teams are already working very hard to activate the spectrum this weekend.”

“Through the utilisation of our 800 MHz spectrum, we shall improve our data revenue performance with increased 4G coverage. We shall continue to put our customers first and to maintain the high standards we have set for ourselves.”

A recent report by ITWeb Africa reference the Authority’s ICT sector annual market report for the year 2020 which showed that the total number of active mobile phone subscriptions has increased to 19.1 million in 2020 from 17.2 million reported in 2019, representing a penetration rate of 106.81%.
